THE GRAN SABANA
THE GRAN SABANA - THE LOST WORLD.
The area known as La Gran Sabana is located in the South-eastern corner of Venezuela at the border with Brazil and Guyana. These mystical highlands, part of the pre-Cambrian Guiana Shield, are one of the oldest rock formations in the world and the remains of when the South American continent was still attached to Africa.
The distinctive ‘tepui’ table-top mountains rise spectacularly sheer from the surrounding jungle. The highest is Roraima, it’s top 15 by 5 kilometres and one of the inspirations for Conan Doyle’s book 'The Lost World'. The largest, Auyun-tepui, covers 700 square kilometers and is the site of the famous Angel falls.
A journey through the Gran Sabana will reveal an abundance of roaring waterfalls, natural springs and encounters with the primitive and spiritual Pemon Indians and perhaps even an extra-terrestrial experience.
The highlight of a visit to this remarkable part of the world is the chance to climb the highest tepuy, Roraima.
