MERIDA / THE ANDES / LOS LLANOS.

Merida, The capital of the state of Merida is always a delight for tourists with it’s milder climate and it’s friendly people. ‘Ciudad de Santiago de Los Caballeros de Mérida’, the city of Mérida sits above an expansive mesa at 1,625 meters above sea level at the foot of the highest mountain in Venezuela. The intellectual atmosphere that emanates from this university-town of 30,000 students is reflected in many of the restaurants, cafes, theaters and cultural institutions of the city. The Andean people of this region live a simple traditional way-of-life still using ancient farming methods.

Merida is an excellent base exploring the Venezuelan Andes which stretch some 400km from the Colombian border north-eastwards and offer everything from snow-capped peaks to lush rainforests, with plenty of opportunities for adventure sport. The most popular area for mountain trekking and rock climbing are the Sierra Nevada de Merida, where several of the country’s highest peaks including the technical Pico Bolivar 5007m, or glaciated Pico Humboldt and the magnificent Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada are located.

Merida: Other popular trekking destinations in the area include Los Nevados, reached via an easy trek along a beautiful mountain track from the top of the ‘world’s longest cable car’, the teleferico, which leaves from downtown Mérida right in front of Jakera Lodge.

Merida: To truly enjoy the charm of the Andes, it is recommended that one travels by car or bus to any of the beautiful and romantic villages that surround Mérida. Opportunities around the region for adventure sport include, Hiking, Climbing, Mountain-biking, Rafting, Canyoning, Horseriding, Paragliding and much more.

Merida: Side trips to the wildlife rich, savannahs of Los Llanos are a must-see.

LOS LLANOS

One of the world greatest wetlands covering more than 500.000 Km2. It's a beautiful mosaic of green plains, brown rivers and millions of birds (more than 323 different species) in all colors of the rainbow. Besides birds the visitor will encounter turtles, caimans (small crocodile species) and the world's largest rodent the Cabibara. Guided by the native cowboys known as llaneros; these proud horse men spends all their life on horseback protecting the cattle against flood, pumas, poachers and piranhas.

The most visited time of the year is in the dry season, from December till April/May. Water becomes scarce and the wildlife gathers around the few pools that are left. In May the first rain begins to fall and the circle of life stars all over again.

Whether you want to walk the swamps searching for the great anaconda, spend a day on horseback or enjoy the unique birdlife from a car seat is Los Llanos a truly amazing experience all year.
