This program is 8 weeks full of Culture and Adventure!
(this can easily become 16 weeks by adding a Volunteering month in each country!)

COSTA RICA

Learn Spanish, Surf or Yoga, Volunteer & Adventure in Santa Teresa – a jungle surf camp hidden in tropical forest yet within a roar of the Pacific Ocean

This program starts on the first Sunday of each month in Costa Rica.

Program activities include Spanish lessons, professional surf or yoga lessons, volunteering in a range of projects in Santa Teresa and a turtle volunteer placement with Cirenas OR ASVO.

This is a traveling adventure so you can explore and enjoy the beautiful hinterland of Costa Rica and get a real feel for the biodiversity of this special part of the world.

Your experience is based at ‘Jakera Jungle Surf Camp’ where we have created a jungle paradise complete with swimming pool overlooked by a rich tropical forest bursting with wildlife including red squirrels, howler monkeys and tiny magical hummingbirds.

We are a 10 min walk from the cool cafes, bars and shops that line the 6km stretch of road and beach that make up Playa Santa Teresa/Playa El Carmen.

See Program 3 for more details about your first 4 weeks in Costa Rica.

Spanish Lessons

Every day from Monday to Friday there will be two, 45 minute Spanish lessons (usually between 15:00-17:00 but subject to change). Following a short test to establish your level and objectives, Spanish classes will be delivered by accredited and licensed teachers. These lessons are tailored to suit all levels, from beginner to advanced, and are designed to help you interact and immerse with the local community and enjoy being in a Spanish speaking country.

We follow our own in-house Jakera Spanish Curriculum, supported by our own Jakera Spanish grammar and exercise booklet which you can buy when in the country.

Welcome to Colombia walk

Day one: Morning one begins with a welcome pro-active meeting where Jakera staff introduce themselves, the place, the country, the town and the programs, during which we all get to know each other.

After the get together we all head out on foot to get orientated with the essentials of the local San Gil community. Additionally to getting orientated, we pay extra attention to introducing you to the real Colombia, and seeing all that is typical in Colombia.

Trekking

We have created seven varied and specially designed treks. All four treks are totally unique from one another but follow the Jakera Trek formula.

What do all the treks have in common? We mix stunning hiking experiences with real life insights into authentic local Colombian Culture, guided and introduced by the locals themselves.

We will trek to remote and ‘out of this world’ sights, such as canyons, mountains, valleys, waterfalls, tropical forests, savanna's and more.

We will take you off the beaten track and show you places that the guide books don’t know about.

Furthermore, at some point on each excursion, we will take a break from trekking to experiencefirst hand a local practices including; coffee haciendas, historical colonial towns, indigenous settlement and traditions, tobacco trade, sugar cane trade, traditional gastronomy and more.

*Particular treks will be chosen in accordance to group potential and local circumstances.

Dance Class

In a fun, social environment we will take everyone through their dancing steps to get them fully in touch with Latin America lifestyle and culture. We focus on Salsa but will also teach Merengue, Bachata, Cumbia and Vallenato. Students with all levels of dance experience have the opportunity to learn and improve with us.

Free-day - Thursdays, Outdoor Adventure on stand-by

On Thursdays we allocate time to personal outdoor adventure ambitions. We have Spanish class in the afternoon as usual, but the rest of the day is free for individuals to participate in the adventure activity of their choosing. Earlier in the week we organise the activities on a per person basis, so by Thursday it’s all go. Activities available include bungee jumping (basic and advanced), white water rafting (advanced), white water kayaking (beginners course or advanced day out), paragliding, repelling, caving, horse riding, mountain biking (downhill and cross-country).

Outdoor Adventure - Wednesdays

On Wednesdays we take a midweek rest from trekking to spend the morning participating in the famous adrenaline adventure sports of San Gil. We have chosen the town’s top ‘beginner level’ adventure activities for this program.

Wednesday Week 1 - Rafting Rio Fonce: Depending on the height of the river, the class of whitewater across the 9km route will range from 1-3 of 5. So it is ideal for beginners. Add that to the deep wilderness setting, and we have an perfect first rafting experience for any beginner.

Wednesday Week 2 - Paragliding Curutti: While the previous week’s rest day was spent drenched in white water, this time it’s high in the sky, joining the birds for a paragliding experience. You will flying a tandem flight with a qualified and experienced pilot lasting approximately 40 minutes, in the peace up-above.

Before which you will have been briefed by the guides on the entire activity to ensure you are well-prepared. This is the perfect paragliding experience for all levels as the sheltered launch and land sights make it a great start if you have never been paragliding before. At the same time, the stunning scenery and overview of our trek makes it a great trip for experts too.

Expedition 1: to Chicamocha Canyon, river-camp in Jordan

The is our signature trip at Jakera Colombia, a mind blowing trip, full of energy & adventure, nature & beauty, peace & tranquility and challenge & reward.

The trip begins with a 1 hr jeep ride from the hostel in San Gil, to the drop off point at the top of the canyon. From here we traverse across the canyon enjoying breathtaking views and hidden waterfalls. The decent takes approx 3 hours. Our camp is right up against the river Chicamocha at the bottom of the canyon. We sleep in hammocks and rest-up by the bonfire on the riverbank.

The following day, we wake up early, at the break of daylight, to beat the pounding sun. The trek up the canyon is a different route and will take less than 4 hours, where we enjoy some stunning rest points. Once at the top, its back in the jeep and to San gil, for a shower, Spanish class and no doubt some relaxing.

Expedition 2: Costal Camping trip to Tayrona National Park

On Monday morning of week 3, we leave our new base camp in Palomino behind for a 2 night & 3 day camping trip down the coast, we leave luggage behind, taking only the essentials with us.

The journey begins early with a 35km drive down the coast to our secluded and remote beach camp for night 1. We set up hammocks before heading out for the day. We head straight to Valencia waterfall, this stunning waterfall is only 2.5km from the drop off point allowing us plenty of time to relax in the natural pools beneath the waterfall. After a picnic lunch we return to the surf camp for a relaxing afternoon where you can chill on the beach or try riding the waves, with surf boards and classes available.

The evening sees us take advantage of the remote paradise surroundings, with a beach bonfire by the crashing Carribean waves.

Day 2, after breakfast we take the public bus 5km down the coast from our surf camp to the entrance of Tayrona National Park. We begin with a 45min trek to the first camp site.

From here there is the opportunity to continue on horseback rather than on foot, individuals within the group can choose their preference, with an additional cost for horse riding.

From the first camp site we continue for another 1hr 45 mins on foot to 'Çabo de San Juan’, where again we will set up our hammocks for the night. We have the whole afternoon to snorkel and enjoy ’La Piscina’ beach and other more secluded beaches - otherwise you can continue to explore more of the park on foot / horseback.

The following morning after breakfast and a morning swim, we trek back to the entrance of the park for the end of our overnight in Tayrona. Once at the entrance it’s time for lunch, before the bus back to the beach camp.

* The itinerary inside Tayron National Park for the overnight is subject to change, depending on season and local conditions.

Expedition 3: Lost City Trek 3 nights 4 days

After breakfast at the hostel, we begin the journey with a 2 hour jeep ride to El Mamay, deep in the jungle. From here it’s all on foot, the only way to see the Lost City.

Trek Day 1: El Mamay - Adan Camp 7.6km
Carrying only our essentials for the trek, our excess baggage has been safely locked away back at the hostel. We begin trekking after lunch, where at a gentle pace we continue throughout the afternoon until we reach Adan camp before sunset. A hearty dinner and open aired bunk beds bring the day to an ideal end.

Trek Day 2: Adan Camp - El Paraiso Teyuna Camp 14.7km
A full days trek lies ahead on day 2, and it’s the toughest day of all. Rolling hills and stunning virgin forest make up the three hour trek to the lunch and swim spot at Mumake camp. After lunch and back on your feet, the trek continues along the picturesque Buritaca river, where after approximately two hours the trek increases in intensity with a steep 1.5 hour climb to camp. El Paraiso de Teyuna campsite is a busy camp, just short of the ‘Lost City’ itself and a great opportunity to meet fellow trekkers.

Trek Day 3: El Paraiso Teyuna Camp - Mumake Camp via the ‘Lost City'
After an early start, it’s about a 1 hour trek to the start of the Teyuna City entrance and the first of the 1200 steps to the summit. The stretch to the summit is not as grueling as it sounds and once reaching the steps, its about another 30 minutes to the lower level of the Lost City.

Once at the lower level of the Lost City, you’ll be given an in-depth presentation about the archaeological site and the ancient ruins. You’ll learn all about the discovery of the site, the excavation and ongoing restoration process in the area.

You’ll have about 3 hours to walk around the site, snap as many photos as you like, and take thetime to reflect on the ancient civilizations that occupied the city up until the 14th century. On theway back, you’ll get a chance to meet a few local families (Kogi people) who to this day live in afew of the houses alongside the ruins.

Then the journey back down begins. Beginning with the descent down the 1200 steps and alongthe river bend and back to Paraiso Teyuna Camp for lunch. From there, you’ll head all the wayback to Mumake Camp, where you stopped for lunch on Day 2. It’s another challenging afternoonwith an hour-long ascent, 1.5-hour descent, and another 2-hour up and down walk.

Trek Day 4: Mumake camp - El Mamey Camp 12.2km
The final day takes you back to the start point and it’s a full morning trek through virgin forest, indigenous communities and rolling hills to get there. We reach the finish of the trek by late lunch, where we rest and prepare ourselves for the two hour jeep ride back to Palomino and somedowntime.
