ADVENTURE SPORTS A few tips to help with travel to and in and around Venezuela. Virtually everything goes here in Venezuela and Jakera can help you with whatever your bag. Venezuela has 42 National Parks for hiking and trekking and around 20 nature reserves (monumentos naturales) which, together, cover some 15 per cent of the total land mass, it also has by far the largest coastline of the Caribbean where all water-sports are possible. Most activities listed below are available from the doorstep of the Jakera Lodge multi-sport camp.

Kayaking

Mochima ‘abundant waters’, encompasses a superb Caribbean coastline and 32 offshore islands and is a paradise for kayaking, we see dolphins virtually every time we go out. There are many uninhabited offshore islands where overnight camping is permitted, we usually catch dinner on the way out. There is no way better than to experience the Orinoco Delta, it’s people and wildlife, then by kayak. We can also arrange kayaking in Los Roques and the Amazonas. There are also lots of white water kayaking opportunities here in Venezuela. For more details see kayaking.

Mountain-biking

Excellent mountain-biking opportunities throughout Venezuela. Mochima National Park, The Gran Sabana, Canaima and Merida areas best. There are also opportunities to combine the use of mountain-biking with other sporting activities, for details look at our multi-sport itineraries.

Diving and Snorkelling

The coral-fringed waters of the Mochima are excellent for diving and snorkelling and the nutrient-rich waters fed by the Orinoco are teaming with fish.

Windsurfing / Kitesurfing

Margarita and Los Roques offer world-class Windsurfing and Kite-surfing as the wind blows consistently year round.

Sailing

The emerald waters of the Caribbean coupled with consistent winds present many opportunities for those happier to let mother nature do all the hard work. Mochima, Los Roques, Margarita are based for charter and we offer solutions for all budgets.

Fishing

The fishing, both fresh and salt-water, is good. Los Roques offers excellent sports fishing for bonefish and most pelagic fish found in tropical waters. Inland there are good opportunities to catch peacock-bass as well as large catfish.

Water-skiing

Possibilities all along the Venezuelan coastline and excellent on the flat waters around Paya Colorada.

Hiking / Trekking / Climbing

All types of walks, from sign-posted trails to remote pristine jungle hikes, flat savannah to imposing technical climbing challenges, much remains virtually untouched. Visitors should note that a permit issued by central or regional Inparques offices is required to visit the parks or Jakera can organise for you.

A favourite destination is the Gran Sabana, with Venezuela’s unique tepuis, flat-topped mountains with vertical flanks, of which Roraima is the highest at 2800m and makes an excellent and not too strenuous multi-day hike. Auyan tepuis is home to the country’s most famous natural attraction, Angel Falls and can also be hiked to. For those seeking something more adventurous there is the whole of the Amazonas jungle to explore.

Another popular region for hiking is the Venezuelan Andes, stretching some 400km from the Colombian border north-eastwards, and offer everything from snow-capped peaks to lush rainforests. The well-developed tourist facilities at the Parque Nacional El Avila include around 200km of fairly easy, sign-posted trails, as well as numerous camping grounds. The most popular area for mountain trekking and rock climbing is the Sierra Nevada de Merida, where several of the country’s highest peaks including the technical Pico Bolivar 5007m or glaciated Pico Humboldt and the magnificent Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada are located. Experienced guides and equipment can be hired in Merida, the regional tourist hub.

Other popular trekking destinations in the area include Los Nevados, reached via an easy trek along a beautiful mountain track from the top of the world’s longest cable car which leaves Merida and travels 12.6km from to the top of Pico Espejo 4765m providing excellent access to starting points for mountain treks. Pico El Aguila, accessible from Valera, can be reached by a bus ride from Merida along Venezuela’s highest road, and the Sierra de la Culata particularly known for its desert-like landscapes.

You’ll also have a short hike to reach the view point for Angel falls. Access to the village of Canaima where the rivertrip to Angel Falls starts is not so straight forward and involves a flight or arduous hike or bike to from La Paragua to Canaima. Canaima offers many spectacular waterfalls and from there it’s a spectacular 50kms to the falls, either by light aircraft, or a motorised canoe trip. Visiting times are from June to November - the rainy season, and requires at least two days.

Rafting

Throughout Venezuela, from grade 3 to 5. Coming off the Andes, the rapids are steep and continuous, technically demanding and one of the few places in the world where you can raft in shorts with the pleasant combination of warm air and water temperature.

Paragliding

From the mountainous ridges of Los Altos high above Mochima, flying down and landing on a Caribbean beach. Merida also offers excellent opportunities to stretch your wings.

Other Horse-riding can be arranged throughout Venezuela. Boxing, baseball and football are the most popular spectator sports in Venezuela and can be seen and or participated in all year round. Caving enthusiasts should head to the Cueva del Guacharo, the most spectacular of Venezuela’s many cave systems, located near Caripe.

Note All forms of hunting are prohibited.

Other
Horse-riding can be arranged throughout Venezuela. Boxing, baseball and football are the most popular spectator sports in Venezuela and can be seen and or participated in all year round. Caving enthusiasts should head to the Cueva del Guacharo, the most spectacular of Venezuela’s many cave systems, located near Caripe.
