Day 1: Arrival Caracas International Airport making sure arrival is BEFORE 17:00 in order to secure same day flight to EL VIGIA (60 min). Transit between the International and National airports are a 7 min. walk through a secure corridor connecting the two airports.
Upon arrival EL VIGIA airport take an airport taxi to Merida Posada – see Background Notes below (approx. 60 mins). We are on the main square of the old town, opposite the famous Teleferico. Welcome drink and dinner. Shared hostel style accommodation.
Day 2: After breakfast time to explore the colonial city of Merida or take a walk to one of the beautiful parks, zoo and animal sanctuary or botanical gardens.
For a supplement the following guided activities are available including hiking, mountain biking, canyoning, paragliding, rock climbing or horse riding (from USD 10 for half day).
Return to Merida for dinner and accommodation as before. Enjoy the nightlife in nearby student bars and clubs. BD.
Day 3-5: Jeep safari to Los Llanos – see Background Notes below. Activities are based around encounters with indigenous flora and fauna and will include; Anaconda and caiman catch and release including night-time safari, piranha fishing, spotting wildlife such as crocodile, capybara, pink dolphin, monkeys, river otters. There are excellent fishing opportunities and you will enjoy some of the most prolific birding on the planet. Finally the night safari to spot giant anteater and other nocturnal life.
We will use different logistics to explore Los Llanos including; boat ride up ‘Rio Guaritico’ – one of the most amazing rivers in the Llanos as far as wildlife is concerned; hiking into the muddy swamps in search of the Giant Green Anaconda (the biggest snake in the world); horse riding... there will also be a chance of fishing for Piranhas and Peacock Bass for your dinner, and dancing as we enjoy a Llaneros party with the famous cowboys who farm this area!
We will stay at a rustic Llaneros finca (farm) in hammocks, BLD included.
Day 6: After breakfast we head again into the hills for a White Water Rafting* adventure (3 hour drive). Professional briefing and equipment provided – including life jackets, helmets and sturdy boats and then we hit the water. Picnic lunch in the outdoors followed by scenic ride back to Merida taking in the beautiful landscape of the Andean Paramo as we traverse high mountains, pretty villages and fertile valleys. On our journey we make several stops, including at Mucubaji Lake, a beautiful lake in the middle of the Andes.
* Rafting is seasonal but can sometimes run all year depending on water levels. Feb – May are the driest months.
Day 7: Final day Merida, opportunity to shop and enjoy the sights and sounds of this exciting city before lunchtime departure for El Vigia airport to connect with international flights.
