Somos Congos – Charity Jungle Hike

Walking through Santa Teresa and Mal Pais you are bound to hear the booming howls of the infamous Howler Monkeys that make their homes in the jungle canopy above, it is obvious to see how they got their names! If you take the time to stop and look up from this ever-growing busy town, you can enjoy watching them in their packs as they jump from tree to tree, often with their babies on their backs. Often they are seen crossing the road across the live electrical wires above the busy roads full of quads, motorbikes, and cars. Before this place was completely inhabited by humans, this was their home, and they are no longer safe in this foreign environment that invites many dangers unknown to their natural instincts. Jakera have just started a partnership working alongside the wonderful charity of ‘Somos Congos’ who have devoted their time to look after the Howler Monkeys and other wilflife that live in this area. The increase of human presence in their once untouched environment has brought an influx of problems such as electrocution and deforestation, reducing their space to live and food sources, putting them at harm and endangering the species. 

We have curated a guided hike through the jungle of Mal Pais, for a $20+ donation, with all the profits going towards the amazing work that the charity carries out to help the endangered Howler Monkeys. The donation will help the charity to; reforest beneficial trees of the Howler Monkey, minimize hazards like electrocution points, become a specialist in Howler Monkey matters, raise awareness and train the community, guarantee on time rescue and vetenary attention in case of emergency.

The Tour consists of a hearty breakfast at our basecamp at Jakera, where you will then leave to Mal Pais which is a 5 minute drive away. From there you will meet your guides and hike into the heart of the jungle where they will share all their wealth of knowledge with you on a guided tour under the canopy of tropical trees bursting with all kinds of wildlife. You will be pointed to and explained about the special flora and fauna that grows there, and each animal you come across. Spot the Howler Monkeys as they call from the treetops and understand why your donation is so impactful in this endagered environment.
