CIRENAS - Turtle Conservation

MON - SUN

Breakfast

After being picked up at the Camp, you will join another group. Your first group effort will be to manage a short hike (about one hour along the beach) to reach Cirenas. You don’t need to carry your luggage, so don’t worry about that.

During your stay, you will spend 4 to 7 days at Cirenas, where you’ll have the opportunity to participate in turtle conservation, permaculture, reforestation, and ecosystem protection activities.

During the high season (August to January), the focus will be on turtle conservation. You will have the chance to protect the eggs and hatchlings of Olive Ridley, Black Turtle, Hawksbill, and Leatherback species that visit local semi-intensive nesting beaches at night to nest. The primary objective of the project is to safeguard adult female turtles that frequent the beaches along this coastline and their nests from human predators, natural events such as beach erosion, and flooding due to high amounts of rainfall during nesting season.

Please note that depending on the season, you may work more in other sectors than turtle conservation, but all the work is essential to the project’s overall success.

All three meals are included during your stay at Cirenas. Back at camp, breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Lunch & Dinner included

From Monday to Friday, you’ll have the opportunity to attend two 45-minute Spanish lessons per day (usually at 09:00-11:00, subject to change based on surf conditions). Our lessons are delivered by licensed and accredited teachers, and on your first day, you’ll take a short test to determine your proficiency level and learning objectives. With classes tailored to suit all levels, from beginner to advanced, you’ll have the chance to interact and immerse yourself in the local community while enjoying your time in a Spanish-speaking country

Your volunteering sessions at Natuwa Costa Rica can last anywhere from two to four hours, depending on the project and schedule. The organization is active in a variety of volunteer areas: https://www.jakera.com/turtle-volunteer-projects/

Every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, you have the option to participate in either surfing or yoga lessons. Our professional surf instructor will guide you through the basics and help take your skills to the next level, all while ensuring your safety by teaching you about local issues such as rip tides. Surfboards are provided for the approximately two-hour lessons, and additional lessons and board rentals are available upon request.

During the times when surf activities are scheduled, you can choose to participate in professional yoga instruction instead. We offer a variety of yoga styles to try during your stay with us, with each class lasting between 60 to 90 minutes. You can attend up to eight classes in the first two weeks. Yoga helps promote mental balance and body control, allowing you to relax and fully enjoy your journey in Costa Rica. Experience the calming mantras and discover a new way to connect with your body and nature by practicing yoga and embracing the pura vida lifestyle.

The first excursion is a 2-hour ‘jungle river trek’ along the river that runs by Jakera Jungle Surf Camp and into the lush tropical forest that surrounds us. As you walk, you’ll find yourself immersed in the stunning surroundings, with a diverse range of flora including trees with specific medicinal applications. The hike helps us understand the beauty of this truly diverse location and how the whole ecosystem works.

The second Wednesday, we hike along the beach to the rock pools exposed by the low tide. Here, you’ll discover the multitude of sea life that lives in the pools and have the opportunity to take a relaxing dip in the warm waters.

During week 4, typically from Monday to Thursday, we embark on an overland adventure to explore Monteverde National Park. The duration of this trip can range from 4 to 7 days and is flexible depending on the weather and program schedule. Rest assured, we will always provide the best option for you and inform you at the beginning of the program. After seven full weeks of adventure, your journey culminates in a final highlight: a scenic and multi-logistical transfer to Manuel Antonio, both over land and sea. This is a unique opportunity to see another breathtaking view of Costa Rica and enjoy its stunning coastline from the water. Along the way, it’s common to have dolphins escorting us, and there’s a good chance to see whales, turtles, or mantarays.

The door-to-door trip takes about four hours, and full service is included. Once you arrive in Manuel Antonio, you’ll have time to enjoy the many activities on offer or simply relax on the beautiful beaches that surround your hostel. We’ve included a trip to the must-see Manuel Antonio National Park, as well as a variety of other activities.

Made so many awesome friends and the group leaders are amazing as well! Sometimes there were problems but everyone tried their best to fix them asap, really feel like I got my moneys worth! However I would say that it might be nice to be notified in advance about the prices of the activities, because i would have no idea that those would be an extra 350€, so maybe if all the activities were listed somewhere in an email with corresponding prices, people can prepare for that

I think I spend too little time in Santa Teresa. I only went out three times in the whole trip, wish there were more opportunities.
